Chiropractic Care May Alleviate Autism
Chiropractic care may help manage autism, according to an analysis conducted by investigators at the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association in Media, PA and Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, CA. This is especially exciting because medication used to treat autism is often ineffective and has harmful side effects.
As part of the analysis, which was published in Explore: The Journal of Science and Healing, researchers scanned eight major medical databases for studies on chiropractic care for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). They identified five studies that met their strict inclusion criteria. After sifting through the research, they determined that chiropractic care may alleviate ASD.
How may chiropractic care quell autism? The symptoms of ASD are triggered by the nervous system abnormally processing sensory input. This process is called sensorimotor integration. The researchers conducting the new study explain that preliminary evidence indicates that chiropractic adjustments may help normalize this key role of the nervous system. “We encourage further research for definitive studies on chiropractic’s effectiveness for ASD. However, given the ineffectiveness of pharmaceutical agents, a trial of chiropractic care for sufferers of autism is prudent and warranted,” conclude the study’s authors.
